A grand musical fireworks display and evening gala to welcome the 2011 Spring Festival kicked off Thursday night at Phoenix Island in Sanya.

Over 1,000 guests were invited to enjoy the visual feast, which began at about 9:00pm Thursday night.

Red, white, orange and pink fireworks were shot into the sky and exploded into various shapes, lighting up Phoenix Island. Advanced technology was used to coordinate the fireworks with a musical soundtrack.

After the fireworks display, the Sanya Art Troupe gave their performances to entertain the audience. The troupe was just back from China’s CCTV New Year’s Gala, which was seen by millions of Chinese at home and abroad on Chinese New Year’s Eve. The evening gala was brought to a climax by singers from Beijing.

To ensue safety during the fireworks display, policemen and firefighters were dispatched to the venue to prevent any fire accidents from happening.

Phoenix Island, the main venue for the fireworks show, is expected to be developed into a tourism centre in Sanya in the future. The island is also where the world’s second luxury 7-star hotel will be located.
