The first batch of all-electric buses started trial operation for the public in Sanya on Jan 29, 2011, reports hinews.cn.

The electric-powered bus is designed to carrying 50 passengers and can travel 300 km before needing to recharge. A city bus generally travels no more than 200 km a day.

The first two electric buses in operation depart from Damao Village in Jiyang Town and are bound for Sanya West Station. Sanya Railway Station is covered by the bus line. After experiencing the fast and convenient bullet train, it costs one yuan for many residents to experience the “green travel” to downtown center.

Each electric bus costs RMB1.5 million yuan, twice than that of an ordinary bus. Although the initial price of the bus is very high, the cost of running them is lower than the current compressed natural-gas buses standard. The cost of powering an electric bus is equal to 30% of that of an ordinary bus.

According to Li Xing Bus Company, the local government has approved to supply 100 of the vehicles necessary to complete the city’s fleets. 40 vehicles will be put into operation before the end of May.
