Chinese Peacock Dance by Yang Liping in Haikou on March 6 and 7
The dancer and choreographer Yang Liping is bringing her very own production, the dance drama “Peacock”, to the Hainan Center for the Performing Arts in Haikou on the evenings of March 6 and 7.
The dance drama “Peacock”, based on the two eternal themes of life and love, is a story about growth, human nature and love.
During the 110 minute show, Yang will perform for one hour and 20minutes, and her niece Cai Qi who plays the role of time in the performance has to gyrate more than 3,000 times continually from the show's beginning to end on one side of the stage, to represent that whatever happens in the world, nature and life will go on unaffected.
In 1986, the then 28-year-old Yang Liping (杨丽萍) rose to fame after choreographing and performing the classic solo dance “Spirit of Peacock” (雀之灵). The dance won her various prestigious awards and made her a nationwide star. Ever since then, the female dancer has been known as the “Peacock Princess” and the "Goddess of Dance”. The peacock figure in her dance has profoundly moved a great many people, and Yang has always been connected with the dance. The dance drama “Peacock” is her latest production.
