A carpet of small gravel and pebbles has recently invaded Sanya beach, one of the main beaches at the Hainan Island resort of Sanya, reports sanya.hinews.cn.

The Sanya Marine & Fishery Bureau set up a special team to investigate the causes in Sanya Bay on Dec 31, 2010. Initial investigation shows that seasonal winds and coastal erosion are the two main reasons for this phenomenon, according to an official with the bureau.

During the winter, monsoons from the north frequently visit Sanya Bay. The strong waves, pushed up by the winds, are bringing a lot of gravel and coral reef stones to the beach. Besides, coastal erosion is another environmental problem that should be blamed for this phenomenon, the official said.

In recent years, the Sanya government has attached great importance to the coastal erosion problem on Sanyas coastline. At present, the relevant departments have banned discharging polluted water into Sanya Bay, and more effective measures will be taken to reduce coastal erosion and keep it under control.
