Overseas tourists can claim a tax refund of 11% on their purchases in Sanya, as the tax rebate policy went into effect from Jan 1, 2011.
On Jan 1, 2011, Mr. Wu Junyan, Vice Mayor of Sanya, announced the inauguration of the tax refund scheme at the Summer Day Department Store in Sanya, the most popular tourist destination on Hainan Island.
The Summer Day Department Store in Sanya is one of the 3 authorized stores to carry out the new tax plan in Hainan, together with the Shengsheng Department Store and Mingsheng Department Store in Haikou, the capital city of Hainan Province
The tax rebate policy is expected to boost business in the shopping centers. Sanya Summer Day Department Store has been busy with diversifying their items to as many as 190,000 to meet customers’ requirements. In order to facilitate tourists to purchase goods in the store, Summer Day Department Store has set up special windows for rebate application enquiries, offering foreign language services to smooth the procedure.
According to the tax plan, foreign tourists or citizens from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who have lived in China’s mainland for no more than 183 days can receive the tax rebate of 11 percent of goods purchased within 90 days before departing the island. The minimum amount of purchase within a day is 800 yuan.
