On 16th December, the Sanya Municipal Committee and municipal government held a meeting concerning the incident of tourists beaten by urban management officers last Satuday night in Sanya.

Qiu Guangdong, the vice captain of the city law enforcement unit, Hexi District, who was directly responsible for the incident, has been suspended and will be put in administrative detention for 15 days with a fine of 1,000 yuan. He has apologized to the wounded tourist and paid compensation for medical expenses, and a damaged mobile phone.

According to a responsible person of the Sanya Police Bureau, the incident happened in Youyi Street Saturday night, when the uniformed officers were chasing street hawkers who were doing business without legal permission. The tourists from Guizhou province found the officers’ action violent and unjustified and recorded the scene with a mobile phone. The officers told them to stop recording which led to a further quarrel and fight.

An official with the Sanya government said the government will make greater effort to civilize law enforcement and further enhance social education to create a good tourism environment in the future.
