Taxi fares rise with the flood waters in Sanya
A taxi at Sanya Phoenix International Airport waited for willing customers
After being inundated with torrential rain for five days, Sanya has seen a huge increase in taxi fares.
Tourists arriving at the airport in the last few days are quoted taxi fares as high as 1000 rmb for trips from the airport to Sanya’s exclusive resort hotels in Yalong Bay.
Tourists were further frustrated with travel from the airport since only a few public busses were making trips to the city with streets closed due to the flooding.
Transport authorities and public transport watchdog seemed ill-prepared for the rains that have suddenly engulfed this tropical paradise as closed roads, cancelled buses and indifferent taxi drivers closed many travel options for travelers from the airport. Unchecked taxi drivers seemed to have jumped on the opportunities to over charge.
Even short trips from the airport to nearby Sanya Bay required reluctant customers to spend over100 rmb Normal taxi fares from the airport run at around 25rmb with fare flag fall of 5rmb or 7rmb, depending on the assigned taximetre . Rains are expected to end in the near future and so should the increased taxi fares.
