Hainan seeks to be attractive international cruise destination
Hainan is looking to cruises to attract more foreign tourists. A home port route linking Haikou and Vietnam will be operating on November 4th, 2015.
According to Chen Tiejun, Vice Director of Hainan Province Tourism Development Commission, Hainan is seeking to enhance cooperation with Southeast Asian nations by developing new transnational cruise routes to overseas destinations like Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
In 2014, 229 cruises brought 192,309 inbound tourists to Hainan.
The government is also planning to establish a cruise and yacht industry investment fund to attract enterprise and capital to invest in infrastructure construction projects, such as cruise berths and yacht public facilities to boost the cruise and yacht industry.
Additionally, allowances will be provided to both cruise ships taking the island as a home port or visiting port and travel agencies bringing visitors to the island by a cruise.
To strengthen its status as an attractive international cruise destination, Hainan is further developing its two cruise ports in Haikou and Sanya. The Haikou terminal berth will be expanded to 100,000 tons. By the end of next year, Sanya Phoenix Island Cruise Terminal will include four piers, two capable of handling 150,000 tons and the others with a capacity of 225,000 tons.
The port facilities in Haikou and Sanya are expected to welcome 80 cruise calls in 2016.
