Hainan plans to give priority to developing 7 cultural and sports tourism industries over the next 5 years to boost it into a competitive international tourism destination.
The plan includes measures to promote entertainment, cultural performances, cultural exhibitions, film and TV production tourism, new media & publications, leisure sports and fitness, and outbound cultural exchanges.
The government plans to lift the added value of cultural and sports tourism industry in Hainan to 6% of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 2020.
Two major cities – Sanya and Haikou will play key roles in boosting these cultural developments. Haikou, as the capital city with the biggest population and the strongest economic clout, will lead the way in developing a hi-tech backed creative industry, as well as sport and entertainment. Sanya, the more prestigious tourist city, will undertake to attract film and TV production companies, and other types of cultural tours.
