Recently, the Wanning government announced an ambitious plan to build the city into the third hottest tourist destination in Hainan, following Sanya and Haikou.
With a meandering coastline of 109 kilometers, Wanning, boasting everything from lush mountains and tropical forests to pristine sandy beaches and hot springs, has experienced a boom in its tourism sector in recent years. The rapid growth in tourism came party due to the government’s greater efforts to promote the city’s tourism offerings.
Last year, 3.62 million overnight-stay tourists visited Wanning, a year-on-year increase of 9.14 percent. The area’s tourism revenue reached 2.95 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 18.1 percent.
The city is trying to appeal to travelers in other ways too. The government’s most creative undertaking is trying to turn the city into a surfer’s paradise. Waning has been prioritizing international-standard surfing competitions such as the Swatch Girls Pro surfing contest to develop its surfing industry.
Apart from sports events, rural leisure travel is a particular focus. Within the city’s boundaries are a range of villages, new and old, along with picturesque natural scenery and well-kept cultural heritage sites. Wanning also plans to diversity its agro-tours, which offer not only home stays but also well-designed trips to Wanning’s most unique rural sites.
Meanwhile, transport and infrastructure improvements are underway in the city. Four tour bus routes have been opened in Wanning improve transportation between major attractions and hotels of the area.
