Hainan to build and renovate 961 public toilets over next 3 years
As part of its campaign to boost tourism, Hainan is planning to spend 406 million yuan to accelerate the construction of high quality public toilets across the island over the next three years.
The public toilet is a symbol of modern civilization and an important image for the future development of the island as an international tourist Mecca.
With an increasing floating population in recent years, the toilet infrastructure was not good enough and the government promised to make public convenience facilities cleaner and better managed as part of a three-year plan.
Since 2010, Hainan has invested nearly 500 million yuan for building and maintaining 1,231 public toilets across the island.
Over the next three years, 406 new toilets will be built on the island and another 555 at public gathering places like scenic spots and transport hubs will be earmarked for renovation.
The goal, with the help of local authorities, is to bring each bathroom up to a "three-star rating" by 2017.
