Construction on the 3rd Hainan airport, Bo’ao Airport will start soon.
“The provincial government and institutions are going over the plans and the groundwork has already been laid for work on Bo’ao Airport to begin in March,” Qionghai City deputy secretary Zhonghui Zhang said.
Bo’ao Airport is situated in Zhongyuan Township, 12 km from Qionghai City and 15 km from the permanent site of the Bo’ao Forum for Asia. The Bo’ao Airport will have a 45 x 2,600 meter runway capable of handling large planes such as Boeing 737-800 and A320 aircraft, a 13,000- sqm terminal and 26 aircraft parking aprons.
Hainan already has two airports: one in Haikou, the provincial capital, on the northern end of the province, and the other in Sanya, a popular seaside resort. Participants in the BFA annual meetings usually fly to Haikou and then take a 55-minute bullet train to Bo’ao.
Experts say the airport will better facilitate traffic to Bo’ao and Hainan, which is planning to build itself into a global tourism destination.
