The tourism industry in Hainan saw an enormous increase during this year’s “Golden Week” (1st-7th October).

During the 7-day National Day holiday, Hainan received 2.189 million tourists from home and abroad, and raked in 3.139 billion yuan in tourism revenue, an increase of 35% and 38.3%, respectively, year on year.

Major tourist cities in the province, including Sanya and Haikou, witnessed robust economic growth during the holiday.

During the holiday period, individual tourists were the main categories of tourists arriving on the island. About 200,000 daily cars from other provinces and the island’s other cities flocked into Sanya for self-driven tours.

Self-driven tours and independent tours have helped to also further boost the hotel industry in Sanya as well, with a record high occupancy rate occurring between the 3rd and 4th of October.

Aside from the hotel industry, retail sales across the island also saw a sharp increase in revenue. The two duty-free shops in the Haikou Meilan Airport and at Sanya Haitang Bay received 149,100 visitors and recorded sales of up to 120,468 million yuan.
