Villagers from Hongling Village in Hainan’s Qionghai City just sent the mother of all lanterns flying up in the air, likely triggering some UFO reports around the area. The lantern measures 40 meters in diameter and was constructed in a week by around 60 young people in the area Tencent News reports.

The lantern costed nearly 300,000 RMB and was comprised of 62 small lanterns that measured two to four meters in diameter.

The firecracker-carrying lantern began burning up after floating some 300 meters away at an altitude of 30 meters. The whole process lasted for five minutes, attracting thousands of audience members.

Flying a lantern is one of the rituals seen during the Ghost Festival. The above lantern is the largest one the village has made so far.

Next to Qionghai City, Jiaji Town also sent a huge lantern flying in the sky. This particular one was constructed with 15 tiny lanterns, each one meter in diameter.

Early morning exercisers were baffled while trudging through trash left at the fountain plaza in Qionghai after the festivities. Cleaners worked overtime to tidy the area.
