The forest coverage area in Hainan reached 61.9% by the end of 2013 as a result of activities launched with the ‘Greening Island Project’ in 2011.

By the end of 2013, a total of 1.36 million acres of forestry areas had been built across the island, involving an investment of 3.04 billion yuan, including 35,000 acres in coastal shelter belts, 112,000 along rivers and reservoirs, 70,000 in passageways, 221,000 in villages, as well as 74,000 acres of urban forest and 848,000 acres of ecological economic forest.

As of now, the forestry area on the island is at 31.93 million acres and the forest coverage rate is at 61.9%.

The Hainan government will continue to promote several green projects in urban and rural areas this year including 20 forest parks, 33 fruits and flowers parks and 45 water parks.
