Hainan has seen over 16 million tourist arrivals in the first five months of this year, up 11.3% from the same period of last year, according to statistics released by the Hainan Statistics Bureau on June 20th.

Of the total, 15.91 million were domestic tourists, up 12% compared with the corresponding period of last year while 303,400 were from overseas, down 16.2% from the same period of last year.

The tourist arrivals brought the island 18.25 billion yuan in revenues, an annual increase of 14.8%.

With regards to the length of stay, the number of tourists staying on the island for more than 5 days stood at 70.1%, a year-on-year increase of 9.3%.

In May alone, the island saw a total of 2.94 million tourist arrivals, a year-on-year increase of 11.4%. The tourism revenue for the period totaled 3.17 billion yuan.
