Lu Yexiang, 100 years old, is the last of the Red Detachment of Women soldiers. Two months ago, Lu accidentally burnt her feet, and she has been in the Qionghai hospital in south China’s Hainan Province ever since, in critical condition. 
 
The Red Detachment of Women was an all-female Special Company of the 2nd Independent Division of the Chinese Red Army, first formed in May 1931. Around 100 women joined this special division in south China’s Hainan Province. 
 
In the 1960s, The Red Detachment of Women film, directed by Xie Jin, was based on this period of history. The film was widely popular, and later The Red Detachment of Women ballet received its premiere performance by the National Ballet of China on September 26, 1964. It is the first and most successful full-length Chinese ballet. 
 
 Lu Yexiang now completely depends on a ventilator to survive. Her right leg is infected, and the hospital recommended amputation but Lu’s family believes she is too old to undergo surgery, so they chose a more conservative from of treatment. Lu is currently in a light coma.
