Statistics from the Haikou Customs show that since the implementation of the Hainan duty free policy in April 2011, the two Hainan duty-free shops in Sanya and Haikou have seen more than 2.5 million consumers make their purchases up to this November, with total sales revenue hitting RMB 6.3 billion.

A total of 8.96 million duty free items have been sold at Sanya Duty Free Shop and Haikou Duty Free Shop at Meilan International Airport from April 2011 to November 2013.

Under the support of duty-free policies, tax refunds after departure, and visa exemptions for tourists from 26 countries, the Hainan tourism industry has been booming in recent years.

The average daily number of tourists visiting the Sanya Duty Free Shop exceeded 10,000 during the National Day and Spring Festival golden weeks.

In addition, Hainan’s total retail sales of consumer goods reached 85.2 billion Yuan in 2012, an increase of 58% compared with that of 2009.
