On the morning of November 15th, the kick-off for the international cooperation project entitled “Strengthening the Management Effectiveness of the Wetland-protected Area System in Hainan” was held in Haikou.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), China’s Ministry of Finance, and Hainan Forestry Department jointly launched the project, with a 5-year duration.

The project aims to strengthen the management effectiveness of the wetland-protected area system in Hainan in response to existing and emerging threats to the globally-significant biodiversity and essential ecosystem services, and Global Environmental Facility (GEF) has provided a total investment of $2.634 million for this project.

The focus of the project is to strengthen Hainan’s nature protection area system to ensure the protection of a representative Sample of its exceptionally rich and unique biodiversity and to more effectively manage the wetland PA subsystem.

The implementation of this project will largely strengthen the restorability of the land protection system and the management effectiveness of the mangrove natural reserves system in Hainan, with 1,000 hectares of mangrove forest and marsh wetland expected to be increased.
