A centenarian couple in Hainan share secrets to longevity
What's the secret to a long, happy life? In south China's Hainan province, a couple both over 100 years old have walked through over 80 years of their lives with each other. As China celebrates Chongyang festival and pays respect to the elderly citizens today, Li Nan finds out their recipe to healthy living.
103 year-old Luo Kaiming is making a new fence for his home. He and his 104-year-old wife have been married for 83 years. They still joke like young love-birds.
"He is losing his hearing, so I call him "The deaf guy". My hair has gone grey, so he calls me "the white hair wife"." 104 year-old Wu Guanfeng said.
The couple has five children. The oldest is already over 80 years old. Their family has extended into the fifth generation, with over 100 members. During last month's Mid-autumn festival, over 90 family members gathered together to celebrate.
"The grandchildren always come to visit with their own families, so my dad and mum are always happy." Couple's fourth child Luo Wenhe said.
Wu Guanfeng says the secret to longevity is to live and eat simply and routinely. They wake up at five or six in the morning, and go to bed at around seven or eight in the evening. They still use firewood to cook meals. Fish is always on the table, and sometimes, even Chinese wine.
"I eat a lot of ginger. It is very good for my health." Wu said.
Their entire life has been one lived modestly. Looking back at their 83 years' marriage, they say mutual understanding is the key.
"When we were younger, he would work really hard to support the family. I appreciate what he's done, so I never quarreled with him. When he comes back home every day, I run him a hot bath." Wu said.
And with the local government now offering to refurbish their home, they still have much to look forward to.
