Sales at Hainan duty-free shops reached RMB1.955 billion, a year-on-year increase of 49%, from January to July of 2013, according to figures released by Hainan finance department.

Liu Zhiping, the head of the Hainan finance department, said that by the end of July 666,200 customers had paid visits to the shops. The per capital consumption was RMB2,935, up 43% over the same period of last year.

Hainan currently has two duty-free shops. One is located in the provincial capital of Haikou, and the other is in Sanya.

The Sanya duty-free shop boasts 8000 square meters of floor space and receives around 10,000 visitors every day.

According to reports, the province plans to open another two duty-free shops, one in Sanya Phoenix International Airport and the other at Mission Hills Haikou.
