At the close of the Routes CIS networking forum this week, Donetsk airport announced a slew of routes along with a new base carrier.
Donetsk International Airport, the host of this year’s Routes CIS event, announced several additions to its route map, including Hainan Airlines flights to Haikou from October.
In addition, Air Onix is to base an aircraft at the gateway this year, and plans to operate flights to Kiev, St Petersburg, Simferopol, Tyumen and Yekaterinburg, said Oleksiy Dubrevskyy Donetsk Airport’s COO.
The carrier is expected to base more aircraft at the gateway next year after it takes delivery of more aircraft, Dubrevskyy told Routes News.
This comes after Wizz Air Ukraine announced in June that it planned to base an A320 at the airport.
On Donetsk-Kiev Zhulyany, Onix will fly 14 times a week from September or October, in addition to the UIA and Utair flights on the route, said Dubrevskyy.
"Kiev was already in the portfolio but demand has dramatically escalated while existing carriers lacked capacity,” he added.
Donetsk-St Petersburg is set to launch in the middle of the winter season, he said.
Onix is also aiming to fly to Yekaterinburg and Tyumen from Donetsk and plans to fly to Simferopol from summer 2014, he added.
Meanwhile, Turkmenistan Airlines has requested slots to fly a weekly B737 service to Ashgabat in the winter schedule.
Services to Istanbul and Barcelona are being boosted through new agreements, Dubrevskyy added, while Pegasus is ramping up its Istanbul flights from three to four frequencies a week. Barcelona, currently a charter destination, will now be served with scheduled flights, said Dubrevskyy.
"We had definite positive expectations from Routes CIS but these expectations were exceeded,” he said. “And we also know that this event will definitely have a long effect.”
From October, Hainan Airlines will also operate flights from Donetsk to Haikou, he added.
