Recently, a series of comics displaying the marketplace life around the East Gate in Haikou became famous online.

The drawings were designed by Chen Jingjing, 30, also known as “Jiangjiang” who grew up in Haikou. “I wasn’t going to draw a book like a tourism brochure. I’m just drawing Hainan through my eyes.”

As the most lively and time-honored gathering place for Haikou residents, the East Gate on the Bo’ai Road has become the most impressive old street in the eyes of local people.

The comics have received hundreds of replies since they were put on the internet at the beginning of July. Some netizens said the drawings were so “magical” that they were reminded of their hometown Hainan. And some netizens wanted to travel to Hainan as the drawings were so enthralling.

"Jiangjiang” plans to create a new series of comics to show more Hainan features such as Hainan Wanlv Park, the arcade buildings, and Hainan rice noodles.
