Recently, 5 towns were awarded the title of Hainan Ecological Civilization Village of 2012.

The 5 towns are Haitang Bay Town and Yacheng Town in Sanya city, Zhongyuan Town in Qionghai city, Jingshan Town in Wenchang city and Shiyuetian Town in Cangjiang County.

The towns were awarded the title for their superior urban environmental infrastructures, great domestic solid waste disposal facilities, large public leisure areas for cultural and sports activities, comfortable human settlements eco-environment, and strong eco-agriculture, eco-tourism industries alongside and high eco-civilization consciousness amongst the public.

In 2001, Hainan Province launched a campaign to build "ecological civilization villages" to improve living conditions in the villages, cultivate an ecologically-aware culture and develop the rural economy. To date, 19 ecological civilization villages have been built.
