In order to balance the development of the region’s hotel industry, Hainan Tourism Bureau has released a plan for the Hotel Industry of Hainan Special Economic Zone 2012-2020.

The plan will focus on the development of mid-grade hotels including 3-star hotels and economical hotel chains as the government plans to slow down the rapidly growing number of high-star hotels.

Under the plans, the government will concentrate on developing the hotel industry in Hainan’s eastern cities along the coast including Sanya and Haikou, and also in some urban and suburban areas of Hainan’s central and western regions.

In rural areas, country hotels with local cultural features will be constructed, and campsites will be developed in some areas with beautiful scenery.

In addition, new hotels are not allowed to be built in the concentration areas of high-star hotels including Sanya Bay, Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay, Qingshui Bay, Xiangshui Bay and Shimei Bay. Only a few hotels can be built in the western coast including Yinbing Peninsula, Yangpu Bay, Qizi Bay and Longmu Bay.

By 2020, the hotel industry will be developed into an advantage industry which promotes the development of the International Tourism Island and the development of modern service industry through combining the culture & entertainment industry, convention & exhibition industry, and business and healthcare industry.

The total number of hotels in Hainan province is expected to reach 4,500-5,000 by 2020.
