The central government recently revealed the second batch of low-carbon pilot provinces and cities, and Hainan was the only pilot province on the list.

Up till now, China has 36 cities and 6 provinces in their low-carbon pilot program.

The construction of Hainan into an international tourism destination meshes perfectly with the low carbon economy’s development in the strategic positioning and development goal of the low-carbon tourism industry

The detailed piloting tasks required for the low-carbon project will help Hainan optimize industrial structures and improve energy efficiency, and facilitate its development into a green island with ecologically-sustainable economic development by taking the service industry as the leading industry and low-carbon economy as the major economic characteristics.

To follow the general guidelines, Hainan will vigorously develop clean energy sources including nuclear power, wind power, hydropower, solar power, natural gas and natural gas biomass energy, and the government will endeavor to increase the share of non-fossil energy in primary energy production to around 12% by 2015.
