Hainan Airlines recently tested in-flight Wi-Fi service on a Beijing-to-Xi'an flight (HU7137). Passengers were able to use Wi-Fi services for one hour and ten minutes of the two hour flight, according to company.
In regards to the test, a technician at Hainan Air stated, "Online services such as real-time video conferencing, Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application, Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo microblogging platform, email, online games, and online payments can all be used relatively smoothly while in flight. We tested upload and download speeds of over 12 Mbps with a stable signal."
Upon receiving approval from related authorities, Hainan Air will soon start onboard Wi-Fi trial flights. After reaching cruising altitude, passengers can turn on their Wi-Fi enabled electronic devices and access the internet by logging on to Hainan Air's in-flight web interface. The in-flight Wi-Fi system uses on-board equipment to establish an internet connection with a ground station. Passengers connect to the internet through the plane's internal WLAN connection.
