Hainan authorities have cracked 109 cases of illegally traded wildlife between November 29 and December 10, and a total of 11,977 wild animals have been seized over the past 12 days.

12 people involved have received administrative justice, the provincial department of forestry has said.

Multiple government departments conducted patrols of airports, ports, bird markets, restaurants, hotels and animal training and breeding farms, seizing 646 animals under special state protection, 1,476 animals under provincial protection and a further 1,476 valuable wild animals, the department said.

To educate and raise public attention of wildlife protection, the department said the sweeps will continue and over 70 hotel owners in Haikou were called on to sign a responsibility contract that clearly banned their buying and killing wild animals for the dining table.
