The Hainan Fragrance Association recently announced that 336 varieties of spice-producing plants have been discovered in Hainan, accounting for more than two-thirds of the known varieties of spice-producing plants on earth.

These include some high-quality spice plants, such as aloes, vanilla, citronella, purple perilla and blumea riparia, which are all highly valuable spices.

With the wide variety and high calibre, the association is now considering utilizing local resources and developing a chain industry to combine production, processing and scientific research in order to turn the island into an ‘Island of Fragrance’.

Relevant institutions and experts are currently working on a general development plan for research and commercial production of the plants.
