With the Mid-Autumn Festival around the corner, China’s top quality watchdog said on Friday that three kinds of moon cakes failed to meet national standards.

The substandard moon cakes are from Wuhan Yipinxiang Food Company, Hainan Dinghao Food Company and Hainan Fumanlong Restaurant, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The administration tested moon cake samples from 16 provincial-level regions, checking ingredients and packaging.

Liu Hongsheng, deputy head of the administration, said all the substandard moon cakes have been taken off the shelves to guarantee the consumers’ safety.

Separately, on Friday, the organization also reported 10 fatalities and 13 injuries stemming from 11 special equipment accidents involving elevators and mechanical equipment in August.

Most of the accidents occurred because the operators lacked sufficient safety awareness. Officials are conducting further investigations, Liu said.

He added that the administration will boost supervision of food products and special equipments such as elevators and mechanical equipment.
