Ghana’s Africa World Airlines (AWA)—the Hainan Airlines’ (HU) joint venture (JV) with the China-Africa Development Fund, Ghana SAS Financial Group and Ghana Social Security and National Insurance Trust—launched operations last weekend.
HU, the controlling stakeholder of the new entity, did not give details on its investment and ownership structure.
Accra-based AWA operates two Embraer ERJ-145 regional aircraft and will be used initially on routes to Kumasi, Takoradi and Tema. The regional carrier plans to expand its fleet and open routes to Abidjan, Abuja, Lagos, Monrovia, Freetown and Lome.
AWA’s management team will come from HU, China-Africa Development Fund and Ghana SAS Financial Group. HU’s Zhang Jiuhua has been appointed as AWA’s chairman and CEO.
