Hainan to hold tourism promotion conferences in South Korea
Hainan can boast having been the hottest golfing destination for Koreans in winter at one point. In 2007, the number of Korean tourists visiting Hainan set a historical record of 175,200. However, Hainan’s Korean tourism market was severely hit by the global economic crisis in 2008, and was unable to recover after the downturn.
Hainan received 26,000 Korean tourists last year, which is just 15% of the number in 2007. What’s worse, the first 4 months of 2012 saw less than 10,000 Korean tourists visiting, down 40% year on year.
However, the outbound tourism market in Korea keeps growing despite the economic crisis. The number of Korean tourists visiting Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, The Philippines and Singapore has increased by 30% to 40% over the years.
After 4 years’ recession, Hainan Tourism Committee decided to revive the Korean tourism market this year. During the 2012 Korean Yeosu Expo next month, Hainan will make more efforts to promote Hainan tourism. 3 large-scale tourism promotion conferences, which will highlight golf tourism, hot spring tourism and honeymoon tourism in Hainan, are expected to be held in Yeosu, Seoul and Busan.
