According to the “Statistics bulletin of China’s star-rated hotels in the first quarter of 2012” released by National Tourism Administration recently, Hainan ranks second among the top 6 Chinese cities in hotel rates.
 
The report shows that the first quarter of 2012 saw a RMB 317.32 of average hotel rate and 60% occupancy rate of China’s star-rated hotels. Shanghai leads the top 6 Chinese cities in hotel rates, followed by Hainan, Beijing, Guangdong, Tianjin and Fujian in that order. And the top 6 Chinese cities in hotel occupancy rates are Hunan, Hainan, Shandong, Sichuan, Henan and Zhejiang.
 
To date, there are 558 hotels in Hainan, amongst which 209 are star-rated hotels, including 22 five-star hotels. The average hotel rate of five-star hotels in Hainan in the first quarter of 2012 exceeded RMB 1000 and the hotel occupancy rate exceeded 60%.
 
However, as the off season approaches, the average hotel occupancy rate in Hainan has dropped to 30%. Meanwhile, hotels in Hainan have lowered their room rates to attract more tourists.
