A lightning strike killed one man and injured 3 others while they were sheltering from the rain in a shabby hut in Jiale Town, Hainan on 19th May.

According to the villager Wang Zhegui, a sudden downpour with thunder and lightning struck 4 young men who were riding motorcycles on the afternoon of 19th May. They stopped riding and sought shelter from the rain in a shabby hut due to the stormy weather. Suddenly, lightning struck the hut and one of the villagers, surnamed Wang, was killed on the spot. The other 3 were badly injured and one of them lost consciousness.

The injured were taken to the hospital after the accident. Wang Guangdao, the one who lost consciousness in the accident, came round 30 hours later. With the money donated by officials and villagers, he is now recovering in hospital. The other 2 have left the hospital after treatment.

Hainan tops China for stormy days with most parts of Hainan seeing 100 stormy days in a year on average. Statistics shows lightning strikes cause nearly RMB100 million of economic loss and dozens of deaths in Hainan every year.

Experts remind people that they should avoid outdoor activities in stormy weather, especially walking or riding in open fields. Seeking shelter from the rain under big trees is also not advisable.
