Star-rated hotels in Hainan doubled over the past 10 years
 
The number of star-rated hotels in Hainan doubled over the past 10 years since 2001. However, 48% of hotel rooms are in Sanya, which reflects the imbalanced development of the hotel industry on Hainan Island.
 
According to the report on the development of he Hainan hotel industry in 2011, Hainan saw 100 star-rated hotels and 20,000 hotel rooms in 2001. By the end of 2011, the number has risen to 306 and 67,000 respectively. Sanya leads the hotel market by possessing 32,000 out of 67,000 hotel rooms in 2011.
 
The report also shows the operations of Hainan’s hotel industry over the past decade. In 2009, 5-star hotels in Sanya topped China’s hotel market by over RMB1,200 of room rates on average. In 2010, 5-star hotels in Sanya led the market again by 52% of gross interest in two consecutive years. The gross interest of 4-star and 5-star hotels in Hainan reached 47% in 2010, much higher than that of the whole nation.

Statistics shows there have been 21 international hotel groups that have settled in Hainan, including 32 branches and 45 hotels. What’s more, another 68 five-star hotels are expected to be built in Hainan by the end of 2016, according to the report.
