Haikou Aiport officials apologize over killing of pet dog for air safety
A pet lover thought his poodle, Ge Ge, was in safe hands when he paid to have it air-freighted from Beijing to Hainan.
But the little dog was beaten to death by heavy-handed officials on the tarmac on arrival at the island's Haikou airport.
Ge Ge had escaped from his kennel, but instead of trying to retrieve the poodle, Miao Qinglang, his owner, claims in an online posting that his beloved pet was killed for "threatening air safety."
The killing has brought a storm of online protests, and Haikou Airport officials apologized, saying they have launched an investigation.
Netizens posted a report of a similar incident at England's Manchester Airport on December 17 which led to a dozen flights being delayed, but ended with airport staff catching the dog, not killing it.
