Clipper Race sails into Portimão, Sanya team gets 1st 2 points
At 11:17 a.m. on September 9th, 2019, Sanya boat “Visit Sanya, China,” crossed the finish line of Leg One of the Clipper 2019-20 Race, arriving in Portimao, Portugal.
Against all odds — strong tides at the Thames Estuary and the English Channel, strong winds near the Bay of Biscay, and a wind tunnel near the finish line — the Sanya team successfully reached Portimao after a 1,200-mile voyage lasting over six days.
With strong teamwork and determination, team Sanya secured the first two points of the Clipper 2019-20 Race, marking a good start for the team’s bid in this challenging race.

The Clipper 2019-20 Race is divided into eight legs, with 15 stopovers. Leg One of the race includes two route sections, namely London, Britain to Portimao, Portugal, and Portimao, Portugal to Punta del Este, Uruguay. After a brief rest, the eleven-strong fleet will set sail again on September 15th, 2019 (Portugal local time); they are expected to call at Uruguay between October 12th and 15th, 2019.
The yearlong, round-the-world promotion for Sanya has been officially launched. Sanya’s appearance in the race is expected to help people in the fifteen stopover cities better understand the tropical paradise city.
