Closure of Hainan West Line Expressway brings pressure to national highway

9 peopled died and 3 injured in separate road accidents on National Highway 225 in Hainan since 15th Dec, due to the increasing traffic pressure caused by the closure of the Hainan West Line Expressway on 15th Dec, 2011, reports Hainan.net.
7 road accidents occurred in the Chengmai, Lingao, Zhanzhou and Baisha sections of the 225 National Highway during the past two weeks, leaving 8 dead and 3 injured.
According to traffic police, heavy traffic congestion has occurred after the Bailian-Baimajing section of the Hainan West Line Expressway was temporarily closed for overhaul and renovation. Large traffic flows were diverted to the 225 National Highway after the closure, which far surpasses the traffic loading capacity of the road.
Related departments have pointed out that the insufficient traffic impact evaluation of the project, lack of road signs, and poor traffic restore capacity are blamed for the heavy congestions. Targeted measures will be brought up and discussed to improve the traffic condition, according to the Hainan transportation department.
