About the Clipper 2017-18 Race

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is a sailing race around the world in 8 legs, with trained amateur crew members. The Clipper Race was established in 1996 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968-69. His aim was to allow anyone, regardless of previous sailing experience, the chance to embrace the thrill of ocean racing; it is the only event of its kind for amateur sailors. Around 40 per cent of crew are novices and have never sailed before starting a comprehensive training programme ahead of their adventure.

Covering 40,000 nautical miles, the Clipper 2017-18 Race will start in Liverpool on August 20th, 2017 and return almost a year later on July 28th, 2018, after following a global route which includes stopovers in Punta del Este, Cape Town, Fremantle, Sydney, Hobart, East Coast Australia (Port TBC), Sanya, Qingdao, Seattle, Panama, New York, and Derry Londonderry.

More than 700 crew members, representing 44 different nationalities, will be competing in the Clipper 2017-18 Race, which is expect to attract attentions of nearly 1.5 billion audiences around the world.

Sanya will welcome the crew in February 2018 following the All-Australian leg.
