Sanya will introduce a new household waste sorting system, starting from October 1st, 2020.

The city’s government authorities recently published a program to introduce sorting of household waste in the city, which includes a set of measures not only for classifying the waste, but also for its transportation, processing and disposal.

According to the approved plan, at least one recycling site for sorting household waste will be equipped for each residential district by August 1st, 2020. By the end of 2020, at least 30 such stations are to be installed across 30 rural villages in Sanya. In accordance with the program, by 2022 a comprehensive system for sorting household waste will be fully underway across the city.

The sorting of waste in Sanya will be organized according to the following four categories:

• Recyclable waste, mainly including wastepaper, waste plastic, waste metal, waste glass products, waste fabrics and other suitable domestic waste that can be recycled.

• Hazardous waste, mainly including waste batteries, waste lamps, waste medicines, waste pesticides, mercury and waste thermometers, waste paint and their containers that cause direct or potential harm to human health or the natural environment.

• Food waste, mainly including perishable organic wastes such as household food waste, kitchen waste and other food waste.

• Other waste, referring to domestic waste other than recyclables, hazardous waste, and kitchen waste.

In order to combat environmental pollution and protect the local ecosystem, the Hainan authorities also intend to completely phase out the production, selling and use of disposable, non-biodegradable plastic bags and plastic tableware products by the end of 2020.

The use of disposable non-degradable plastic bags and plastic tableware will be totally banned in the canteens of the Communist Party, local government organizations, and public institutions in Hainan, as well as from meetings and conferences, exhibitions, and other events by August 1st, 2020.
