The Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.73 percent or 18.5 points to close at 2,515.86 points today on transaction value of 65.52 billion yuan.
 
The Shenzhen Component Index was down 1.67 percent or 188.89 points to close at 11,112.64 points today on transaction value of 61.52 billion yuan. Both bourses started to retreat in the afternoon.
 
The 7-day Shanghai Interbank Offered Rate (Shibor) rose 53.75 basis points to 4.3033 percent today.
 
Beverage makers underperformed. Hainan Yedao Group (600238, 11.07, -7.364%), Anhui Gujing Distillery (000596, 98.2, -4.549%) and Sichuan Tuopai Shede Wine (600702,22.95, – 4.17%) fell by more than four percent.
 
Cement makers retreated today, and the top losers from this sector included Tangshan Jidong Cement (000401, 19.26, -5.123%), Conch Cement (600585, 21.75, -5.022%) and Anhui Chaodong Cement (600318, 18.74, -4.970%).
 
Shipbuilders too fell. The leading decliners were Guangzhou Shipyard International (600685, 18.15, -3.148%), CSSC Jiangnan Heavy Industry (600072, 24.11, – 2.978%) and China Shipbuilding Industry (601989, 12.18, -2.638%).
 
Most of the financials fell today. Founder Securities (601901, 5.66, -5.034%), Anxin Trust and Investment (600816, 20.63, -2.135%) and Merchant Securities (600999, 11.78, -1.751%) dropped the most from this sector.
 
China Construction Bank (601939, 4.45, -0.891), which posted a 31.2 percent growth in first half net profit, fell. Bank of China (601988, 2.93, -0.340%), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (601398, 4.08, -1.211%) and Bank of Communication (601328, -4.6, – 0.862%) too fell.
 
Major property developers underperformed today. Poly Real Estate (600048, 10.6, -1.395%), Gemdale Corporation (600383, 6.09, -3.639%) and China Merchant Property Development (000024, 18.98, -1.043%) fell.
 
Oil companies outperformed today, with a majority of oil stocks posting gains. Xinjiang Zhundong Petroleum Technology (002207, 15.95, +10%), Offshore Oil Engineering (600583, 5.51, +4.159%) and Landocean Energy Services (300157, 45.86, +3.148%) were the top gainers.
 
Some of the coal producers posted bullish performances today. Shanxi Coking (600740, 13.48, +10.041%), Shanxi Meijin Energy (000723, 16.1, +5.851%) and Xinjiang International Industry (000159, 11.55, 3.867%) outperformed.
