Under the background of the island’s development as an international tourist destination, the provincial government is planning to increase handling capacity in the airlines sector to enhance the island’s destination accessibility, reports xinhuanet.com.

In recent years, major airlines companies are considering more new flights to Hainan. In the first half of this year, Hainan airports have added more than 20 domestic air routes.

“Hainan will be an important region with fast-growing profits for South Airlines in the future as a series of key tourism projects have been put into use,” said a spokesman from South Airline‘s Hainan Branch.

At present, Haikou and Sanya have opened more than 130 air routes, linking 80 cities from home and abroad.

However, compared with the fast growing demand, the limitation of passenger throughput in the two airports has slowed down the development of the Hainan airline industry.

According to the local bureau, the expansion project of Haikou Meilan Airport is ongoing and passenger throughput is expected to reach 15 million while Sanya Phoenix Airport will be able to handle 20 million passengers by 2020.
