The State Council recently has approved a project to build a new airport in Boao, Qionghai city, Hainan to mainly serve for the annual Boao Forum for Asia, reports xinhuanet.com.

According to the project, the Boao Airport will be located at Zhongyuan Town of Qionghai City, 15 km from the permanent convention venue of BFA – Boao International Convention Centre.

Involving a total investment of 945 million yuan, the construction of the first phase of the airport will have a 2,600-meter runway and 15 aprons for private planes and corporate light jets.

By 2020, the airport is designed to serve as a civilian airport with an annual passenger capacity of 480,000.

Currently, Hainan has Meilan International Airport and Sanya Phoenix Airport, but each individual passenger throughput has approached or even exceeded the original design standard, making expansion or construction of new airport an extremely urgent matter.

Upon its completion, one of the airport's important functions is to serve for the VIPs planes at home and abroad when attending the annual conference in April.
