As of the end of May, to ensure the working safety of Hainan fishing boats and improve the rescuing efficiency of rescue crews, a total of 2,050 large and medium-sized fishing boats have had GPS navigation equipment installed, reports xinhuanet.com.

According to the Hainan Provincial Ocean and Fishery Bureau, poor communication is the main problem that influences safe production of the Hainan fishing industry.

With a total investment of 79.15 million yuan, the Hainan Ocean and Fishery Bureau together with other departments jointly launched the GPS navigation and communication system project last November.

The project, planning to have 6,000 large and medium-sized fishing boats install GPS navigation and communication equipment within 3 years, is part of government program to promote the responsible fishing industry.
