Haikou in Hainan Province was hit by severe rain during the National Day holiday, causing direct economic losses of 618 million yuan ($96.93 million) as of Friday, according to data provided by local news website hinews.cn Saturday.

As of Friday morning, the torrential rain had affected 511,898 people in Haikou, although there were no reports of deaths.

Damage to municipal facilities, parks, communications, electricity grids and residences amounted to 253 million yuan. Agriculture and forestry suffered 313 million yuan losses; manufacturing and transportation 17 million yuan; and water facilities 35 million yuan.
