China’s mainland population has increased to 1.34 billion by Nov.1 last year, a 73.9 million increase from the previous census in 2000, according to the preliminary results from the sixth census released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) late in April.
Of the 31 provincial regions, the top 3 least populous ones are Tibet, Qinghai and Ningxia. Tibet, with about 3 million people, or 0.22 percent of the nation’s total population, is the least populated region.
