In the backdrop of spiraling coconut prices in Hainan, the government has been forced to take measures to control the price rise on the island. Great importance will be attached to the development of coconut plantations to end the supply problems, reports hainan.net.

In recent years, Hainan has had an annual production of 200 million coconuts, which can hardly meet market demands. The low production has forced the coconut processing enterprises to import coconuts from other countries.

In the first 4 months of this year, importers are seeing inflation on whole coconuts. Hainan has imported a total of 61,000 tons of coconuts, an increase of 53.8% compared with last year. The total price for the imported coconuts reached 19 million US dollars, up 2.06%.

Besides, importers are warning of difficulties getting coconut supplies from Vietnam with the increasing demand for coconut products in Southeast Asia countries, which caused prices to rise by as much as 50% during the same period last year.

According to the insiders, the form of establishing a coconut cultivation center will be a good way to increase the coconut production as well bring the coconut price rise under control.
