Mr. Luo Baoming, Governor of Hainan Provincial People's Government met Madam Cecilia Irene Schelin Seidegard, Governor of Gotland Province of Sweden in Haikou, capital of Hainan Province on the morning of March 1, 2011.

Luo Baoming made a short introduction to the delegation from Gotland including Hainan's geography, climate, preferential policies, clean energy sector and recent economic achievements.

Both sides agree that as island economies, though far from each other, Hainan and Gotland share a lot similarity in tourism development, clean energy technologies and agriculture. Therefore, huge potential of cooperation exists in areas of biogas power technology, wind power technology and the financial market.

Hainan and Gotland started contact from 2007, bridged by the Consulate General of Sweden in Guangzhou. After several high level visits and nongovernmental interactions, the friendship between two provinces blossomed marked by the signing of Letter of Intend of Establishing the Sister Province Relationship on June, 2010. Princess Birgitta of Sweden and Mr. Anders Granat, Vice Governor of Gotland led a delegation to Hainan 5 months later participating the 14th Inter-Island Tourism Policy Forum, and sighed the Agreement of Establishing the Sister Province Relationship with Hainan counterpart.(Source: Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province)
