Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev will pay a state visit to China on Feb. 21-23 at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao.
The following is a brief introduction to Nazarbayev.
Nazarbayev, a Kazakh, was born in July 1940 in Almaty region. He graduated from a metallurgy technician school in Karaganda Oblast and finished a correspondence course of the senior party school of the Soviet Union Communist Party's Central Committee. He has a doctor's degree in economics and was conferred an honorary doctor's degree by Peking University in December 2002.
Nazarbayev has served as party secretary of Karaganda Oblast, secretary of the Kazakh Communist Party Central Committee, chairman of the Kazakh ministerial meeting, first secretary of the Kazakh Communist Party Central Committee, chairman of the Kazakh supreme soviet and president of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic.
Nazarbayev was elected president of the independent Republic of Kazakhstan in December 1991, and a referendum in April 1995 extended his presidency to 2000. He was re-elected twice in presidential races in January 1999 and December 2005, respectively.
Nazarbayev has visited China many times. He was given the highest award of the Chinese Olympic Committee and was named an honorary citizen of Hainan Province.Nazarbayev is married to Sara Alpysovna, and has three daughters.
