4th October, 2013, the first Starwood’s complex resort in Greater China- Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula Resort and Four Points by Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula hosted the UNICEF Check Out for Children Challenge – Shenzhou Peninsula Beach Carnival. It was a loving day as we raised the funds for the world’s most vulnerable children but also a fun day as we had many activities and performance which was a memorable addition to our guests’ peninsula holidays.

UNICEF is the United Nations Children’s Fund, which is an UN agency dedicated to protecting and promoting child rights. The UNICEF Check Out for Children Challenge is a staff fundraising competition between the various Starwood Hotels which began in 2003- and continues to gather strong support throughout Starwood Hotels and Resorts in the Asia Pacific region. For 17 years UNICEF and Starwood Hotels and Resorts have been working together to raise funds to help children in need worldwide. In that time, almost $8.5M has been raised.

As a two-hour event to raise funds for charity, the beach carnival was compiled with a variety of performance, games, food & beverage, spa service and bazaar that appeal to all ages. More than 300 in-house guests made their own contributions to the fund by purchasing admission tickets for a lucky prize draw for just RMB20 per adult and RMB10 for children. Moreover, there are so many wonderful and delicious food & beverage choices onboard carnival, including Grilled Panini Sandwich, Hot Dog, Egg Tart, Hainan Chicken Roll and much more snacks and drinks to please all palates. With a magnificent sea views, our guests were lounging on the sandy beach with a massage treatment from Shine Spa by Sheraton to attune their mood to peaceful ocean rhythms. For the children, their magical Clown Uncle accompanied them all the time. They also started an adventure in a big-scale inflatable castle, joined various beach games & contests with their parents and danced with folk dancers to have a fun.

Throughout the event there were charity auctions and the grand prize was 2-night stay at Presidential Suite of Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula Resort. Besides, the participants of this fund raising event also stood a chance to win other Starwood hotels’ room vouchers, Green Fee vouchers from the Dunes, a 41-hole golf marvel with beach landscape designed by world renowned golf course designer, Tom Weiskopf, Water Sports vouchers from Kokomo Beach Club, a one-stop premium watersports provider, Shine Spa by Sheraton Treatment Package vouchers, valuable personal collections donated by the complex Executive Management Team members and much more.

This Beach Carnival was a great success and all proceeds from the event are going to UNICEF. Douglas Brennan, the General Manager of the complex says, “The Starwood Cares program is at the heart of our daily work principles and caring for our global community is a way of us connecting with each other through this kind of charity event for doing good to feel good and I hope our guests will enjoy a day of fun at Shenzhou Peninsula beach while they can make a difference for the vulnerable children worldwide”.
